People have many reasons for wanting to know more about their family history - finding a connection to the past, preserving the past for future generations, and storytelling are just a few.
Creating a family tree is not only a useful tool for discovering where you and your ancestors are from, but a family tree can also help to establish rights of inheritance and rights to property.
What got me started?
My husband is the fifth generation of Thomas Jefferson Evans. In December 2009, we were visiting my mother when she started sharing what she was finding on Ancestry.com. My husband told me that he knew about his grandfather's back four generations, but he knew nothing about the first Thomas Jefferson Evans (his 2nd great-grandfather).
So I started an account and started searching. It wasn't long before I found where he was born, his wife's name, and where he was buried. In my searching, I found that he was born in southwestern Pennsylvania and moved to Uhrichsville, Ohio, as a young man. He met and married his wife in the midst of starting a clothing business with his brother. I found that over his lifetime he also started a clay brick company, started banks. purchased real estate, and even ran for US Senate.
As a former teacher, I love problem solving and doing research to figure things out. I have memberships with several genealogy organizations that help me to find the documentation needed to build an accurate family tree. We currently have over 5,000 people in our family tree, some of which go back several generations. I get really excited when I find information that connects a person to their story and events in history.

Comprehensive approach to researching your genealogy to six generations will provide you with more context for your family story, such as ancestors' occupations, military service, and other social factors. In many cases, your story will include immigrating ancestors which will connect you to ethnicity.
